SPECIAL CASES IN DNA TESTING:
PRISON : DECEASED : FAMILY STUDY : INTERNATIONAL : MILITARY
PRISON
Prison collections are frequently required in the establishment
of paternity. These collections require extensive coordination between
the Medical Legal Testing Service scheduling department and the
correctional facility. The following information is required when
coordinating these collections:
Required Information:
- Requesting agency's name and account number.
- Full name of inmate. Alias or AKA if known.
- All parties' names, social security numbers, and dates of birth.
- Inmate number. The inmate number is very helpful in coordinating
collection.
- Name, address, and phone number of facility where individual
is incarcerated.
- Contact person at the facility when available.
- Court order, administrative order, or signed request/consent
of inmate involved in paternity action.
DECEASED
Deceased cases can be performed if an alleged father is no longer
available due to death. There are several types of specimen that
can be used to test for paternity ie: blood, hair, bone, teeth,
and skin. Please contact our customer service department at 800
456 9913 for assistance. Medical Legal Testing Service will make
arrangements to procure the deceased sample once the following information
has been provided.
Required Information:
- Requesting agency's name or relationship to decendent to include
address, name, and account number.
- All parties' names, social security numbers, and dates of birth.
- Decendent's race.
- Name, address, contact person and phone # of facility where
the specimen(s) of decedent are located.
- Type of specimen available and how it has been stored.
Family Study
When there is no specimen available from the alleged father there
is the option of doing a reconstruction case also known as a family
study. In this procedure Medical Legal Testing Service uses known
family members to try and reconstruct genetic information. Please
contact our customer service department 800-456-9913 to discuss
which available family members would be the most helpful in performing
a family study.
Required Information:
- Requesting agency's name and account number.
- All parties' names, social security numbers, and dates of birth.
- Names and relationships of proposed family members who are being
collected.
- Collection of the biological mother of the child.
INTERNATIONAL*
International cases require additional coordination and can be
quite challenging due to time differences and language barriers.
To assist with these collections, Medical Legal Testing Service
requests all the information listed below.
Required Information:
- Requesting agency's name and account number.
- All parties' names, social security numbers, and dates of birth.
- If another agency is involved, ie: long arm or international
reciprocity, Medical Legal Testing Service requires the agency's
contact person, phone number, email address, and physical address.
- If the other agency has access to a paternity testing laboratory,
then Medical Legal Testing Service requires the laboratory's name,
address, phone number, or email address.
- If there is not another agency involved, Medical Legal Testing
Service requires the name, address, and contact person of the
facility the Medical Legal Testing Service can forward a kit to.
MILITARY*
Military cases require additional coordination and can be quite
challenging due to parties located overseas or aboard ships. The
following information is required when coordinating these collections.
Required Information:
- Requesting agency's name and account number.
- All parties' names, social security numbers, and dates of birth.
- If the individual is located on an overseas base or on board
ship, Medical Legal Testing Service requests the individual's
commanding officer's name and address to forward the kit to.
- A court order, administrative order or signed request/consent
requesting paternity testing to be sent along with the kit.
- If there is a base hospital or clinic available please provide
the name, address, and phone number of the facility.
*Because Medical Legal Testing Service does not have standard collection
sites for these types of collections they can be challenging and
require additional time
